A Bit About Me

Black marks of willow charcoal stroke with breaks and smudges

My drawing practice is heavily influenced by my training as a sculptor. Charcoal is a very physical material for me, working with it is as natural as sculpting in clay. Check out my technique here.

Dogs are my main subject though I do draw other animals too!

I grew up in a house of cats. Much as I love them, they kept their emotional cards deep down in the tip of their often treacherous tail.

Getting to know dogs was so different. They communicate in ways I can read, from the tale tip all the way up to the twitching snout . They lay bare all of their complexed character and feelings….and that’s what I really love to capture.

Every drawing is a unique challenge, not only in nailing the likeness and the play of light over the subject, but giving life and expression to the character, the important glint in the eye when it looks back at you.

I work from my studio on the edge of Henley on Thames. I love the river, the beech cathedral woodlands and lying in the long grass meadows watching busy insects and the passing skies.
