Charcoal captures the character in black & white

I draw with the same material used by our ancient ancestors 28,000 years ago in their cave paintings.

The sticks of charcoal I use are literally lengths of Willow that have been expertly charred by fire. The greys and blacks are layers of soot that I apply in a push-pull technique - applying and lifting charcoal from the paper. Building the image in layers. Defining the darkest tones and using various erasers to lift the highlights and detail texture and whiskers.
